ThomasLloyd's sustainable real asset portfolio management

ThomasLloyd’s sustainable real asset portfolio management offers private individuals, companies and their advisors a truly exclusive investment approach, regardless of the amount being invested. This is due to an active, holistic and independent management philosophy, a best-in-class portfolio allocation and high expectations on returns, costs and transparency.

The asset management is characterised by the diversity and the associated risk spreading of a unique multi-asset strategy. It invests in a broad, international spectrum of concrete, crisis-resistant and sustainable real asset projects. At the same time, it invests in a wide range of asset classes that structurally represent and securitise these real assets. The asset management can either act as a diversification solution added to an existing portfolio mix or serve as the porfolio’s core investment. For investors who are willing to accept a certain degree of illiquidity, ThomasLloyd offers to stabilize their portfolio based on high-quality real assets, to reduce the risk of loss and volatility, to increase the return potential and, at the same time, to sustainably increase the cash flow.

Investment focus on sustainable real assets

The Plus

The investment philosophy, investment guidelines and restrictions of ThomasLloyd’s sustainable real asset portfolio management differ significantly from traditional offers. It also presents clear advantages to the investors, aggregated into four risk-adjusted investment strategies that take into account the investment objectives, risk profiles and investment horizons of each individual investor.

Independent, institutional real asset portfolio management with an attractive risk-return profile

The portfolio management allows investors to participate in selected sustainable real assets world-wide. These are usually reserved exclusively for sector-experienced global institutional investors who are able to invest tens or hundreds of millions of euros per transaction. It is ideally positioned for investors to benefit long-term from the higher earnings potential these asset classes offer from the structural imbalances in supply and demand as well as from their complexity and illiquidity premiums. These are not available with traditional equity and bond exposures. The advantages of successful real asset investments are generally achieved in the medium to long term. This is reflected in an investment horizon which aims for absolute returns in the medium to long term in all four investment strategies. To counter market developments adequately, ThomasLloyd proactively adapts its real asset portfolio whenever necessary on the basis of its internationally award-winning investment process. As a bank-independent asset manager, ThomasLloyd is free to decide how the portfolio is allocated – whether with its own real assets or those of third-party providers. The only rule is having the best projects in terms of financial, ecological and social returns (a multi-manager approach).

Sustainable real asset portfolio management with guaranteed ecological and social impact

ThomasLloyd’s portfolio management pursues a consistent impact investing approach. This differs substantially from other investment strategies with a “sustainability label” because it has a principle of mandatory and verifiable ecological and social impact as depicted in its positive catalogue (see depiction on the left). Investments are only being made if the real asset meets ThomasLloyd’s mandatory ESG criteria which are based on international sustainability standards (e.g. World Bank, PRI), and if the investment has a measurable and documentable impact. The asset management ensures this by investing directly in unlisted sustainable real assets instead of listed securities. Only this can guarantee that the applied financial resources are always subject to own-supervision, without leaving the sphere of influence, and that the continuous verification of the use of funds is ensured – from the investor’s depository account down to the individual real asset. This is the only way to exercise far-reaching control not only over financial efficiency, but also over the ecological and social impact over the entire lifecycle of the project. This is a service that a securities manager cannot provide per se.

Efficient real asset portfolio management on fair terms

The portfolio management offers a fair, transparent and performance-focused “value-for-money” approach. There are no individual transaction costs, no ongoing depositary fees and no initial charges on own products, instead there are discounts on management fees and initial charges, which ThomasLloyd obtains from third-party providers due to the high turnover volume and then fully passes on to its investors. Bearing in mind that the transaction costs alone for due diligence and transaction documentation of a single real asset can be in the seven-digit euro range, and that such processes cannot be standardised, ThomasLloyd’s asset management is by far the most cost-effective way to invest directly in sustainable real assets within the range described.
