ThomasLloyd in North America

Twenty years of experience, from power plants and their financing to the technologies this market needs now

ThomasLloyd entered North America and the cleantech sector together in 2005. Our teams have since been responsible for power plants with a combined 3.9 GW in the United States and Canada, and have acted as lead arranger, sole placement agent or exclusive financial advisor in corporate and project financings. We are now applying that experience to mobile power and water for AI data centres.1 2

First into markets that are not yet commoditised

For more than twenty years our sustainable power generation business has developed renewable energy and hybrid projects as a first mover into new markets, with new technologies and new forms of supply agreement. Our focus has been on segments and regions that are underserved and not yet commoditised.

This approach means taking on the regulatory, technological and operational complexity these markets demand rather than avoiding it. To do so, we combine engineering, financing and operating capabilities within a single company.

We build what we finance, and we operate what we build

Gas

Eight gas-fired power plants in the United States, from 226 to 679 MW. Dispatchable capacity at the scale a grid depends on, 3.7 GW in all, each plant run in a leading capacity rather than held as a stake.1

Bioenergy

Three bioenergy facilities in the United States, 173 MW. Baseload generation from biomass, the technology our own three plants in the Philippines run on today.1

Solar

One photovoltaic plant in Canada, 69 MW, built in three phases. Developed, financed and taken into operation from bare ground.1

Current focus

Why data centres have to bring their own power and water

In the United States data centres consumed 178 TWh of electricity in 2024, 4.3 per cent of total power demand, and that figure is projected to reach 606 TWh by 2030. Grids cannot supply it, so operators are required to bring their own power, with limited or frequently no grid connection available.

AI loads swing faster than generation can follow

Artificial intelligence workloads cause swings of tens of megawatts within seconds. Turbines trip or wear out chasing the load, grid operators curtail the site, and training runs crash. What is required is technology that responds within milliseconds, close to the disturbance, absorbing and returning reactive power as the load moves.

Water is the second constraint

These facilities also require dedicated cooling and water supply at scale, and securing it is becoming harder. Ageing infrastructure, more toxic effluent and stricter regulation make reliable supply difficult for industrial users. New treatment technologies cut the power a plant needs by up to 90 per cent, and industrial cooling by up to 50 per cent.

Our Solutions

Power and water for AI data centres

Mobile Power Solutions
We have been building a mobile power generation, storage and grid services business in the United States since August 2026, serving data centres, ports and maritime, utilities and construction. It will deliver rapidly deployable bridging power, shore power, and grid support and emergency power solutions.
Water treatment

In May 2026 we entered into an exclusive strategic technology partnership with the owner of a patented, nature-based algal technology, which delivers reuse quality water and uses up to 90 per cent less energy than conventional systems. It has been in commercial operation for twelve years, with more than 40 projects in the United States, Mexico, Egypt and Malaysia.

Beyond North America

A renewable energy pioneer in Asia-Pacific

We built the first utility-scale renewable energy plant in the Philippines, financed by the first loans a Philippine bank ever made to a solar project. What followed was the largest solar M&A transaction in South East Asia.¹²
